What the report says

A court in The Gambia has dismissed an objection to voter registration filed against Yankuba Ceesay, keeping his name on the voters’ register. According to Foroyaa, which reported the case on 8 October 2026 through AllAfrica, the Brusubi Revising Court found that the person who challenged the registration, Abdul Karim Drammeh, did not provide enough evidence to show that Ceesay was not a Gambian citizen.

The ruling was issued by Magistrate Mam Samba Jallow under the Elections Act, 2025. Drammeh told the court that he is a registered voter from Bakau and had served as a polling agent during the 2026 supplementary voter registration exercise. He said he objected because he believed Ceesay was not entitled to register. The court also heard from the Alkalo of Brufut, who said he did not personally know Ceesay and relied on information from another representative.

In her decision, the magistrate said the key issue was whether the objector had proven, on the balance of probabilities, that Ceesay was not eligible to remain on the register. The court cited sections of the Elections Act dealing with voter registration, objections and evidence, and stressed that filing an objection alone does not establish the claim.

The ruling is significant because it reinforces the need for evidence in electoral disputes and shows how the revising court process is used to challenge voter eligibility in The Gambia. The court ordered that Ceesay’s name remain on the voters’ list in the relevant constituency.
