What the report says

The G7 has agreed to coordinate the release of up to 100 million barrels of oil and diesel over the next four months in an effort to cool fuel markets and reduce pressure on prices. According to BBC World News, the move was discussed by leaders including those from the US, UK, Canada, Japan, Germany, Italy and France, with the EU also represented. The release will be organized through the International Energy Agency, and leaders said part of the plan includes a frontloaded diesel release in the first 20 days.

The decision came after President Donald Trump threatened to ban diesel exports from the US unless European countries put more of their own fuel stocks onto the market. BBC World News said Trump later described a ban as not really under consideration, while French President Emmanuel Macron said the bloc had agreed to avoid export restrictions on energy and energy products. UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, representing Britain at the meeting, said the step was meant to stabilize supply chains and shield households and businesses from price shocks.

The announcement matters because diesel is widely used in transport and agriculture, so higher prices can affect food and other essentials. BBC World News also reported that the UK has been especially exposed because more than half of its diesel is imported, including a significant share from the US. More broadly, the G7 also said it would coordinate refinery maintenance and encourage members able to do so to increase diesel output, as global supplies remain tight amid conflict-related disruptions and reduced Russian exports.
