What the report says

G20 finance ministers and central bank governors are meeting in Bangkok, Thailand, alongside the annual gatherings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank, as officials confront the economic fallout from the US-Israel war on Iran. Al Jazeera reported that the conflict and wider tensions across the Middle East are feeding uncertainty in global markets, including higher energy prices and disruption to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

The talks involve most G20 finance chiefs, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva and World Bank Group President Ajay Banga. One notable absence is US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, with Washington sending other senior officials in his place. The Bangkok meetings are also expected to help set the tone for the G20 leaders’ summit scheduled for Miami in December.

According to Al Jazeera, energy costs and inflation are likely to be central concerns, along with rising debt burdens in many major economies. Australia’s treasurer has said he will push for de-escalation in the Middle East and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, arguing that global growth is being squeezed by higher fuel costs and tighter financial conditions.

More broadly, the report says the meeting comes at a time of strained cooperation inside the G20, with disputes over trade, exchange rates and industrial policy complicating efforts to reach joint positions. That matters because the group is meant to coordinate responses to shared economic risks at a moment when the global outlook is being shaped by war, debt pressures and persistent trade tensions.
