Fuel Prices Force Lwengo Transport Operators to Park Vehicles as Farmers Count Losses

What the report says
Fuel costs are putting pressure on transport operators, farmers and traders in Lwengo District, according to Nile Post. The outlet reported that petrol at several stations in the area ranged from Shs6,650 to Shs6,880 per litre, while diesel sold between Shs6,950 and Shs7,119 per litre, making it harder for taxi and motorcycle owners to cover daily operating costs.
In Mbiriizi trading centre, drivers said passenger fares have not kept pace with fuel expenses, reducing profits on routes such as the trip to Kampala. Some operators said they are now buying fuel in small amounts, while others have stopped working altogether because they cannot afford to keep vehicles on the road. Transport leaders also warned that more parked vehicles could deepen hardship for families that depend on driving for income.
Farmers and traders said the higher transport charges are making it more expensive to move produce to larger markets where prices are better. As a result, some residents fear they may be forced to sell locally at lower prices instead of paying to transport goods farther away. The report said people in the district are calling on government to help ease fuel costs, arguing that cheaper transport would support farm sales, business activity and the price of everyday goods.
More broadly, the situation reflects a wider cost-of-living and logistics strain that can affect rural economies when fuel prices rise, especially in places where road transport is central to trade and market access.
