From South London to the Cranes, Asiimwe’s Uganda Story Takes Shape

Nathan George Asiimwe, a 20-year-old right-back born in Uganda and raised in South London, is starting to settle into Uganda’s national football team, the Cranes. According to Nile Post, he made his senior debut for Uganda in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Tunisia on September 24, then played again four days later in a 1-0 win over Libya.

The report says Asiimwe assisted Uganda’s equaliser in the Tunisia draw, giving him an immediate impact at international level. His early appearances mark an important step in a career that has been built in England, where he joined Charlton Athletic’s academy at age nine and later moved through the club’s youth and senior setup. He has also had loan spells at Hartlepool United, Walsall, AFC Wimbledon and, most recently, Salford City.

Nile Post adds that Asiimwe was born in Uganda but moved to South London with his parents when he was two, later living in Kent. He described family guidance and faith as important influences on his life. While he was eligible to represent England or Uganda, he chose the Cranes after previously receiving a call-up in 2024 without playing. His early matches suggest Uganda is adding another young, overseas-developed player to its squad as the team continues its AFCON qualifying campaign.
