Joe Riley has spoken to BBC Sport about his move away from full-time football, 10 years after he started for Manchester United in the same Europa League match that marked Marcus Rashford’s senior debut. Riley, now 29, says injuries helped push him out of the professional game and into a new career in financial protection, while he continues to play part-time for Warrington Rylands in the seventh tier of English football.

Riley came through Manchester United’s academy with players including Rashford, Scott McTominay and Dean Henderson, and made two senior appearances for the club. His most memorable outing came in February 2016 against Midtjylland at Old Trafford, when he was named in the starting XI and played 79 minutes as United overturned a first-leg defeat. He later left United and had spells at Bradford City, Sheffield United on loan, Walsall, Carlisle, Fylde and Tamworth.

The BBC report says Riley’s career was repeatedly affected by injuries, including a hamstring problem, shoulder dislocation, ACL damage and a long-running foot issue that required surgery. While recovering, he began preparing for life after football and now works in Sale, near Manchester, selling life insurance, income protection and other cover. Riley said he is happy with the change and does not want to return to full-time football.

His story highlights the contrast between elite academy football and the realities many players face outside the top level, where short careers and injuries can force an early transition to another profession.
