French Serie A footballer Yael Trepy in intensive care after near-drowning

What the report says
French footballer Yael Trepy, a 20-year-old forward for Serie A club Cagliari, is in intensive care after what Italian media described as a near-drowning incident in a swimming pool in Porto Cervo, northern Sardinia. Al Jazeera reported that the club confirmed he is being treated at a hospital in Sassari and said it is staying in close contact with doctors and Trepy’s family.
Cagliari did not give details about how the incident happened, but Italian reports said Trepy was rescued on Sunday after swallowing a large amount of water. Those reports also said he was placed in a medically induced coma. The club asked for privacy and said it would share further updates when possible.
Trepy joined Cagliari’s academy in 2022 from Union Sportive Creteil in the Paris area. He made eight Serie A appearances last season and scored once. His condition has drawn attention because he is a young player in a top-flight Italian club and the club has not yet provided a timeline for recovery.
More broadly, near-drowning cases can become serious quickly because of breathing complications, and treatment often depends on how long a person was without oxygen. That general context is not specific to Trepy’s case, but it helps explain why his hospitalization is being treated as urgent.
