French giants Bordeaux relegated to sixth tier for financial irregularities

What the report says
French football club Bordeaux, one of the country’s most storied teams, has been sent to the sixth tier of the domestic pyramid after sanctions linked to financial irregularities, Al Jazeera reports. The decision was confirmed by the Nouvelle-Aquitaine league on Thursday, following a summer ruling that the club had not shown it could cover roughly 10 million euros needed for the 2025-26 and 2026-27 seasons and meet debt obligations.
According to the report, Bordeaux were sold last month for a symbolic one euro to US-based investment group Park Bench, which also agreed to absorb remaining debt. The club recently appeared before the regional oversight commission, which backed its recovery budget and gave a favorable view of its potential place in Regional 1, the top level of the local amateur system. Dominique Delport, named president by the new owners, said the rebuilding process could now start.
The move underlines how far the six-time French champions have fallen. Bordeaux, where Zinedine Zidane began his career, were relegated to Ligue 2 in 2022 and placed under judicial restructuring in 2024, which led to the loss of their professional status and academy. Al Jazeera says the club’s continuation plan now runs over 12 years and has cut debt from 26 million to 13 million euros. The case highlights broader concerns about financial oversight in football and the fragility of historically successful clubs under debt pressure.
