Free health camp uncovers hidden illnesses

The Observer reported that more than 300 people attended a free medical outreach in Buziga, Kampala, where health workers screened residents for several illnesses and provided consultations, treatment, referrals and health education. The Ggaba Road Corridor Rotary Cancer Run Activation Medical Camp was held at the Buziga Islamic Centre Grounds on July 16, drawing doctors, nurses and volunteers. Organisers said demand was higher than expected, with the available medicines used up by the end of the camp.

According to the report, the camp tested for malaria, HIV, tuberculosis, syphilis, typhoid, hepatitis B and C, blood sugar levels, sickle cell disease, and prostate, breast and cervical cancers. Forty-five women were screened for cervical cancer, with three referred after abnormalities were found. Fifty-two women received breast examinations, while 120 men were screened for prostate cancer; one positive case was referred for specialised follow-up. Sickle cell screening covered 128 people, identifying 24 carriers and one person with sickle cell disease, alongside counselling and psychosocial support for some participants.

District Governor Nominee Peter Kagwa, who officiated, encouraged regular medical check-ups, while Rotary Club of Buziga president Beatrice Sekabembe Juuko said the outreach aimed to bring preventive care closer to residents who may delay treatment because of cost. The camp also launched activities ahead of the 2026 Rotary Cancer Run, scheduled for August 30. The Observer reported that proceeds from the run will support construction of the Rotary Cancer Centre at Nsambya, intended to expand access to cancer treatment in Uganda.
