France braces for another day of mass protests as security on high alert

What the report says
France is preparing for another large day of demonstrations as authorities tighten security after unrest during earlier protests. According to Al Jazeera, more than 70,000 police officers and gendarmes were being deployed nationwide on Saturday, with officials aiming to stop renewed marches from turning violent. The mobilization comes after protests on October 17 were marked by looting, vandalism and clashes, and more than 2,000 people were detained, based on official figures cited by the outlet.
The planned rallies are centered on grievances over deteriorating school conditions and the rising cost of living, but the movement has broadened into wider frustration over inequality and President Emmanuel Macron’s government. Several cities, including Montpellier, Rouen, Nice and Lyon, banned demonstrations in central areas, while a union-backed march in Paris was rerouted after the original route was blocked. Al Jazeera reported that some rights groups criticized the restrictions as a threat to peaceful protest.
Businesses and cultural sites in central Paris took precautions, with some shops boarding up windows and several metro stations closing. Major institutions including the Louvre and the Musée d’Orsay were shut for the day, and Art Basel Paris canceled part of its weekend program. Macron met student representatives on Friday and promised more teachers and changes to the university admissions system, but the talks did not ease tensions.
The unrest is also intersecting with France’s broader political climate ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with attention turning to the far right as Marine Le Pen’s National Rally holds a congress in Orléans. Authorities expect a counter-demonstration there as well.
