In Bordeaux, where a blaze was burning about 15km from the city’s outskirts, resident Pierre Pourquery told the BBC that a dense smoke haze had reached the city, with some people using masks and others finding it hard to breathe.

The BBC said wildfires across the two countries have burned tens of thousands of hectares and prompted more than 300,000 evacuations. In Spain, residents in affected areas described urgent evacuations and the disruption of ordinary life. The BBC cited AFP reporting from the central Madrid region, where more than 27,000 hectares have burned, and from Castellón province, where residents said the fires were more intense than anything they had personally experienced. Reuters also reported from Betxí, where one resident said people could not work or continue normal routines while familiar mountains burned.

The fires have also affected tourism in western France. Holidaymakers told the BBC that smoke and ash forced them to leave or cancel plans around Lacanau and Bordeaux, in some cases creating disputes over accommodation refunds. The accounts underline the wider impact of Europe’s summer wildfires, which can threaten homes, public health, travel and local economies even where flames do not directly reach.
