Four Die After Eating Meat at Rakai Burial

Police and health officials in Uganda are investigating a suspected foodborne illness outbreak in Rakai and nearby Lyantonde districts after mourners became seriously ill following a burial meal. According to the Nile Post report, four people have died and more than 10 others were admitted to hospital after eating beef served at a ceremony in Rakai.

The victims are believed to have eaten meat from a bull slaughtered for the burial of a man identified only as Umar. Masaka Region police spokesperson SP Twaha Kasirye said three of the deceased had been identified as Charles Bangirana, Jennifer Ntejerize and Christmas Behekanira, while the fourth victim had not yet been named at the time of publication. Those who fell ill are being treated at Lyantonde General Hospital, and the bodies were taken to the mortuary for postmortem examinations.

Authorities have collected samples from the deceased and from the affected areas for laboratory testing. While the cause has not yet been confirmed, investigators are examining a possible anthrax link. Anthrax is a bacterial disease that can infect people through contact with or consumption of infected animals, and the report notes that this possibility is being considered pending lab results.

Police and health teams in Rakai and Lyantonde are monitoring the situation and urging anyone who ate the meat and later developed symptoms to seek medical care immediately. The incident has also raised concern because of earlier anthrax outbreaks in the region.
