Four arrested over fatal shooting of South African boxer Zolani Tete

South African police have arrested four people in connection with the fatal shooting of former world boxing champion Zolani Tete, Al Jazeera reported. The arrests were made over the weekend, and police said one of the suspects, aged between 22 and 28, has been formally charged with murder. Tete was 38.

According to the report, Tete was attacked on Friday evening as he returned to his home in Mdantsane, in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province. A 27-year-old woman who was with him in the car survived the shooting but remains in hospital. Police did not give a motive in the public statement cited by the outlet.

Tete was a two-weight world champion, having won the IBF junior bantamweight title in 2014 and the WBO bantamweight belt in 2017. Al Jazeera noted that he also held a place in boxing history after a 2017 title defense that ended in just 11 seconds, widely described as the fastest knockout in a world championship bout.

The report adds that Tete had recently completed a four-year anti-doping ban and was preparing for a comeback. South Africa’s sports minister said the country had lost one of its best fighters, underscoring the significance of his death for the national sporting community.
