Four arrested over boxing champion's murder in South Africa

Four people have been arrested in South Africa after the fatal shooting of former boxing world champion Zolani Tete, according to BBC Africa. Tete, 38, was killed outside his home in Mdantsane, Eastern Cape, on Friday in what officials described as an ambush. A young woman travelling with him was also shot and is receiving hospital treatment.

BBC Africa reported that one of the suspects, a 22-year-old arrested on Saturday, is expected in court on Monday and faces murder and attempted murder charges. The other three were detained on Sunday and are due in court on Tuesday. Two of those suspects have already been charged with unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, while it was not yet clear whether they would also face murder-related charges.

Tete was a two-weight world champion who held the WBO bantamweight title from 2017 to 2019 and the IBF super-flyweight belt in 2014. He also held a Guinness World Record for the fastest knockout in a title fight. BBC Africa said he had been training for a comeback bout after a suspension ended earlier this year. His death has prompted tributes from South African sports officials and others in boxing, underscoring his standing in the sport and the wider public impact of the killing.
