Former NMG Journalist Turns to Grassroots Politics After Media Shutdown

Nile Post reported that Daniel Mwesigwa, a former Nation Media Group correspondent based in Mukono, has entered local politics after the shutdown of NMG operations affected several journalists. Mwesigwa registered on Sunday to run for Local Council I chairperson of Nsambwe A Village in Mukono Central Division, Mukono Municipality, on the National Unity Platform ticket.

According to the report, Mwesigwa was joined by supporters and fellow journalists during the nomination process. He said his campaign will emphasize accountable village leadership, stronger community unity, better service delivery and local development. He also pledged to work with residents and leaders to seek development opportunities, improve livelihoods and lobby for basic services.

Nile Post said one of Mwesigwa’s stated priorities is fixing a damaged drainage channel, which he described as a safety and security problem for residents. He alleged that community members had previously raised funds for the work, but the project was not completed and residents did not receive accountability for the money. The report also said he identified land disputes as a major local concern and promised to promote lawful, transparent land dealings to reduce conflicts.

The race is part of grassroots-level politics, where LC I leaders serve as the first point of contact between residents and government structures in Uganda. Mwesigwa’s bid also highlights a wider transition from journalism to public leadership, with his campaign framing transparency and trust between residents and village leaders as central issues.
