Florida teen drops addiction case against Meta ahead of second ‘bellwether’ trial - CNN

CNN reported that Meta will not face what had been expected to be the second individual “bellwether” trial over claims that major social media platforms intentionally addict and harm young users. The plaintiff, a Florida teenager identified by the initials R.K.C., withdrew his case against Meta on Wednesday, shortly before jury selection was due to start in Los Angeles Superior Court the following week.

According to CNN, R.K.C. sued Meta, TikTok, YouTube and Snap in 2023, alleging that addictive product design drew him into heavy platform use and contributed to sleep loss, suicidal thoughts and other mental health issues. He had recently settled with YouTube, TikTok and Snap on undisclosed terms, leaving Meta as the only remaining defendant. Meta said the claims against it were dropped without payment, and a company spokesperson described the development as vindication of its decision to fight the suit.

Attorneys for R.K.C. characterized the broader litigation as successful and said their client chose not to proceed against Meta because of the strain of a lengthy trial and his desire to focus on recovery and therapy, CNN reported. The Social Media Victims Law Center, which is leading many similar individual and family cases against the companies, declined to comment.

The withdrawal is significant because it comes amid hundreds of related lawsuits by families, school districts and state attorneys general over alleged harms to young people. CNN noted that Meta and YouTube were found liable in the first individual case earlier this year, while other proceedings and settlements involving Meta and rival platforms remain part of the wider legal fight over youth safety and social media design.
