Phys.Org reported that researchers studying harmful cyanobacterial blooms in Southwest Florida have detected bloom-related toxins in air samples, raising concern that exposure may occur through breathing and not only through contact with contaminated water. The findings were published in the journal Toxins in a paper titled “Developing Tools to Assess Airborne Cyanobacterial Toxins in Southwest Florida, USA.”

The article places the study in the context of nutrient-driven cyanobacterial blooms in rivers, lakes and estuaries, which can be fueled by nitrogen and phosphorus from sources such as agricultural runoff or insufficiently treated sewage. It also notes prior Brain Chemistry Labs work on toxins in the Caloosahatchee and St. Lucie rivers and references previous research examining possible links between bloom proximity, cyanobacterial toxins and neurodegenerative disease risks.

The key public-health implication reported is that airborne exposure could extend beyond shorelines and may be harder for residents to avoid than contaminated food or water. The researchers said more assessment is needed to understand chronic low-level exposure and potential protections for human health.
