Five killed as Kyiv and Moscow trade strikes, Russia hits second bridge

What the report says
At least five people were killed in a new round of long-range strikes exchanged between Ukraine and Russia, according to Al Jazeera’s report published on October 3, 2026. The attacks also hit infrastructure in several locations, including Kyiv, Odesa region, occupied areas in eastern and southern Ukraine, and Russia’s border regions.
Al Jazeera reported that Russia struck a Liberian-flagged ship in Ukraine’s Odesa region, killing one person and injuring three others, while 12 crew members were evacuated safely. Separate strikes were reported in the Russia-occupied Luhansk and Zaporizhia regions, where Moscow-backed authorities said several people were killed or wounded. Russian media also said one person died in Ukraine’s attack on Belgorod region.
In Kyiv, a Russian strike on the Northern Bridge injured two people. Al Jazeera said this was the second bridge attack in the Ukrainian capital within two days. The report also noted that Russia’s Foreign Ministry warned diplomats and foreigners in Kyiv to leave the city because of the danger.
The broader context is a war that has continued for nearly five years, with both sides carrying out long-range attacks increasingly aimed at civilian infrastructure and energy or transport-related targets. The report says the fighting has brought renewed pressure on Ukraine’s Black Sea trade routes and added to the strain on cities already facing repeated air attacks.
