Fires break out at French schools as students protest nationwide

What the report says
Fires and other disturbances have broken out at schools in several parts of France as student-led protests over education conditions spread nationwide, according to BBC World News. The demonstrations have focused on complaints about teacher shortages, overcrowded classrooms, poor facilities and aging buildings, with university students also joining the unrest in some cities.
BBC reports blazes at schools in Nantes and Rouen, with one fire at the Nelson Mandela high school in Nantes starting after a bin was set alight and then spreading to the building’s entrance. In Marseille, staff at Victor Hugo high school were reportedly splashed with petrol, while a headteacher in Auchel was injured by a firework. The unrest has also affected transport in Marseille and Strasbourg, where services were disrupted amid vandalism and attempts to block movement.
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu held a crisis meeting as the government described the protests as having turned into “urban violence.” French media cited large numbers of arrests and injured police officers, while at least 30 universities were reported to have been blockaded. The protests have become politically charged, with figures on the left and right trading blame over the unrest.
The BBC says the demonstrations began last week at lycées, or upper secondary schools, and have since spread widely. The situation matters because it reflects broader frustration among students and families over public education funding and conditions, while also raising concerns about public order and the government’s response.
