Video Games Chronicle reports that Square Enix has released a new trailer marking the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy X, ahead of Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster launching on Nintendo Switch 2 this week. The Switch 2 version is scheduled to arrive on July 23, bringing the remastered package of Final Fantasy X and its direct sequel, Final Fantasy X-2, to Nintendo’s newest hardware.

The report notes that Final Fantasy X originally launched on July 19, 2001, as the tenth mainline entry in Square Enix’s long-running RPG series. It was a major technical step for the franchise at the time, moving the series onto PlayStation 2 and using fully polygonal environments rather than the pre-rendered backdrops associated with earlier 3D entries. Its success led to Final Fantasy X-2 in 2003, the first direct sequel to a main Final Fantasy game.

Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster has previously appeared on several platforms, including PS3 and Vita in 2013, PS4 in 2015, PC in 2016, and Switch and Xbox One in 2019. According to Square Enix’s listed features cited by VGC, the Switch 2 version includes HD character, monster and background visuals, remastered and arranged music, content from the International versions, and quality-of-life options such as high-speed mode and the ability to turn off random encounters.

VGC highlights one caveat for existing Switch owners: the publication says there does not appear to be a free or discounted upgrade path from the Switch edition to the Switch 2 port. The new version is listed at $49.99 / £44.99, meaning players who want the Switch 2 release may need to buy it separately.
