Polygon reported that Naoki Yoshida, producer of Final Fantasy 14 and Final Fantasy 16, cautioned fans against expecting other classic Final Fantasy games to receive remakes on the scale of Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 7 remake project in the near future. Speaking during a “Naoki’s Room” event at Final Fantasy 14 Fan Fest in Berlin on July 26, Yoshida discussed the issue alongside Naoki Hamaguchi, director of the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy.

According to Polygon, Yoshida said player interest in remakes is understandable, but he pointed to Final Fantasy 6 as an example of why the task could be unusually demanding. He described that game’s scope as enormous, and suggested that remaking comparable older entries with the ambition of the Final Fantasy 7 project could require four or five separate releases. Polygon noted that the Berlin event otherwise focused mainly on Final Fantasy 14’s next expansion, Evercold.

The comments matter because Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 7 remake effort has already become a long-running, multi-part undertaking. Polygon noted that if the third installment, Revelation, arrives in spring 2027 as planned, the project will have stretched across more than a decade. That timeline helps explain Yoshida’s concern that similarly expansive remakes of other entries could be difficult to justify or complete.

Polygon also raised possible alternatives, such as less expansive remakes centered on visual updates and quality-of-life changes, or a stylized HD-2D approach for pixel-era games. Those ideas were presented as context rather than confirmed Square Enix plans.
