What the report says

IGN reports that Final Fantasy VII Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi is addressing concerns about “open world fatigue” as Square Enix prepares the final entry in its remake trilogy. In an interview with Eurogamer cited by IGN, Hamaguchi said the issue is important to him because large games can leave players unsure of where to go or what to do, even as the freedom of a broad fantasy setting remains part of the appeal.

According to IGN, Hamaguchi said the development team is applying lessons from Final Fantasy VII Rebirth by giving players clearer information about available activities and their difficulty. He indicated that Revelation will keep that design approach, with enough direction to help players navigate without removing the sense of exploration. One example discussed was use of the Highwind airship, where players may need to rely partly on memory when choosing where to land.

The scale of the game is also increasing. IGN said Hamaguchi described Revelation’s world as larger than Rebirth’s, making player guidance a higher priority for the team. The game is expected to conclude the trilogy that began with Final Fantasy VII Remake and continued with Rebirth, following Cloud, Tifa, Barret and their allies in the conflict with Sephiroth.

IGN reports that Final Fantasy VII Revelation does not yet have a fixed release date, but is expected in spring 2027 for PC, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The comments matter because Rebirth’s size and abundance of optional content became part of wider industry debate over whether open-world games can overwhelm players.
