Fighting escalates in Yemen; Houthi attacks trigger alerts in Saudi Arabia

Fighting in Yemen intensified as the country’s internationally recognised government and the Houthi movement traded accusations over attacks that have also raised security concerns in Saudi Arabia. In the latest claims reported by Al Jazeera on 10 September 2026, Yemen’s government said Houthi shelling killed three children in Marib province, while the Houthis said Saudi forces carried out dozens of air raids across Yemen in a 12-hour period.

According to the report, Saudi Arabia issued civil defence alerts in several provinces after the Houthis said they were responding to continued strikes. A Saudi-led coalition spokesman accused the Houthis of targeting infrastructure and towns inside the kingdom with missiles and drones, and said the coalition would respond. No casualties were reported from the Saudi alerts.

The report said the renewed violence is part of a broader escalation after a 2022 UN-brokered truce largely slowed major fighting. Since clashes resumed in July, combat has spread across several provinces, including Marib, al-Jawf, Hodeidah and Taiz. The World Health Organization said more than 1,000 people have been killed or wounded since late August, with tens of thousands displaced.

Al Jazeera also noted regional implications. Pakistan warned that attacks on Saudi Arabia could activate a recently signed joint defence agreement, while Iran rejected Arab League accusations that it was interfering in Yemen. The conflict, which began after the Houthis seized Sanaa in 2014, remains a major source of instability in the region.
