Lewis Ferguson has said he was not particularly close to leaving Bologna during the summer, despite reports linking him with a move back to Rangers. In comments reported by BBC Sport Football, the Scotland midfielder said he spent time considering his future after the World Cup, but ultimately stayed with the Serie A club.

Ferguson, 27, came through Rangers’ youth system before moving on to Hamilton Academical and then Aberdeen, eventually joining Bologna in 2022. He has captained the Italian side since 2023 and was part of their Coppa Italia-winning team in 2025, although his league starts dipped last season. He is now under contract until 2028, with an option for an additional year.

The player said that a return to Ibrox remains a long-term ambition, but not one he wants to discuss while still at Bologna. He stressed that he grew up supporting Rangers and that the club has always been important to his family, but added that the timing was not right this summer.

The report also notes that Rangers manager Derek McInnes has previously pointed to an obvious connection with Ferguson, having worked with him at Aberdeen. For now, Ferguson has been a regular for Bologna in the opening stages of this season, underlining his current role there while leaving open the possibility of a future return to Scotland.
