Feline parvovirus outbreak reported in Henrico neighborhood - WWBT

WWBT reports that Henrico Police’s Animal Protection Unit is warning residents in and near the Magnolia Ridge subdivision in Henrico County, Virginia, after a confirmed outbreak of feline parvovirus. According to the station, animal protection officers went to a home on Spurloch Court on July 15 for a welfare check involving multiple cats and found several animals with signs of illness consistent with the virus.

The cats were taken to a veterinarian and tested positive, WWBT reported. Officers also found additional cats at and around the property that may have been exposed. Henrico Police said it was not known whether those cats had contact with other neighborhood cats, raising concern about possible spread beyond the home.

On July 18, police executed a search warrant at the property and seized many cats, according to the report. The animals were brought to the Henrico County Animal Shelter, where they were placed in quarantine and were to receive veterinary care. Police said no charges had been filed at the time of the report.

The Animal Protection Unit is urging people in the Magnolia Ridge area to make sure their cats are current on vaccinations. WWBT noted that the feline distemper vaccine is considered a core immunization for cats and helps prevent the disease. Reported symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting and low energy. Officials advised anyone who thinks their cat or another pet may have been exposed to contact a veterinarian.
