KOMO News reported that federal and local agencies used Seattle’s six-week World Cup schedule as a large-scale test of public-safety planning, with crowds gathered around the stadium and waterfront for matches and watch parties. FBI Seattle Special Agent in Charge W. Mike Herrington told the station that no major security incidents occurred during the Seattle matches, which officials viewed as the intended outcome of extensive preparation.

According to KOMO, the planning brought together federal, state, county and city law enforcement to address possible risks including terrorism, protests and unauthorized drones. Herrington said the coordination was unlike previous efforts in the city and could become a model for how Seattle manages future major events.

A central focus was airspace security. The FBI said 42 drones were seized from operators who violated flight restrictions during the tournament. KOMO reported that $12 million in federal grants funded new counter-drone systems, led by the King County Sheriff’s Office, allowing authorities to monitor airspace in real time, find operators and, if needed, take control of drones considered a threat.

The equipment is expected to remain in Seattle and be used at future large gatherings, including Seafair and professional sports events. KOMO also noted that officials were expected to release results from “Operation Red Card,” a multi-agency effort focused on violent crime during the World Cup period. The lasting significance, as reported by KOMO, is that temporary tournament security investments may become part of Seattle’s broader event-safety infrastructure.
