Fatah, Dahlan bloc hold reconciliation talks ahead of Palestinian elections

Senior delegations from Fatah and Mohammed Dahlan’s Democratic Reform bloc met in the Egyptian city of Alamein on Monday for reconciliation talks, according to Al Jazeera, as Palestinian factions position themselves ahead of legislative elections expected in November. The discussions were led by Palestinian Authority Vice President Hussein al-Sheikh for Fatah and Democratic Reform deputy leader Samir al-Mashharawi, amid concern inside Fatah that Dahlan’s camp could join a wider opposition coalition.

Al Jazeera reported that the meeting was prompted by growing talk of alliances among Fatah rivals, including Hamas, Democratic Reform and other Palestinian groups. Analysts cited by the outlet said Fatah wanted to prevent Dahlan’s faction from becoming part of a bloc that could expose internal divisions and strengthen a challenge to Mahmoud Abbas’s leadership. Al-Mashharawi said the atmosphere was positive but that no practical agreement had yet been reached, and he called for decisions from Abbas to help unify Fatah.

The talks also reflect broader questions about Palestinian politics, including succession within Fatah and the shape of post-war governance. Dahlan, a former senior Fatah figure now based in the United Arab Emirates, remains an influential but divisive figure. Al Jazeera noted that election plans are tied partly to reform pressure from European and Arab governments, while also offering Dahlan a possible route back into formal politics.

The report said uncertainty remains over whether elections will be held as planned and how much a new legislature would be able to alter power if Abbas retains key appointment authority within the wider Palestinian political system.
