Harvard Health Publishing reported that older adults who naturally walk at a brisk pace may have better cognitive outcomes as they age, based on research published July 14, 2026, in Neurology. The article, written by Joyce Hendley and reviewed by Dr. Robert H. Shmerling, described an analysis of five large aging studies involving nearly 4,000 older adults with an average age of about 84, along with two smaller studies that included brain imaging or post-death brain tissue analysis.

Researchers identified a group they called “super-movers,” defined as participants who walked faster than about 93% of their peers on timed walking tests. Compared with slower walkers, these participants were about half as likely to develop cognitive impairment during follow-up periods of 3.4 to 5.4 years, and about 60% less likely to report a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia. They also showed slower decline on tests involving memory, processing speed and mental flexibility.

The Harvard Health article said brain scans suggested faster walkers tended to have a larger hippocampus, a brain region important for memory. However, post-death tissue findings showed similar levels of Alzheimer’s-related brain changes in faster and slower walkers, raising the possibility that the faster walkers had greater brain resilience rather than an absence of disease-related biology.

The report emphasized that the findings do not prove fast walking directly protects the brain. Still, the results fit with broader evidence linking physical function and activity with healthier aging, and Harvard Health framed staying active as a reasonable strategy to support long-term brain health.
