Farmers in Mityana, Kassanda and Mubende Get Support to Boost Production and Household Incomes

More than 10,000 smallholder farming households in Uganda’s Mityana, Kassanda and Mubende districts are receiving support meant to improve farm output and household earnings, according to Nile Post. The assistance includes improved seeds, agricultural training and financial literacy initiatives, with the broader aim of strengthening food security and helping rural families build more stable incomes.

The report says the intervention is being carried out through partnerships between district leaders and Raising the Village, a community-based organisation. Farmers are being given seed for crops such as maize, beans and groundnuts, alongside practical guidance on planting, garden preparation and crop management. Local project staff said the training is intended to help beneficiaries use the inputs more effectively and avoid the low-yield results many households have experienced in recent seasons.

The article also notes that farming is a major livelihood source in all three districts, particularly in Kassanda, where local leaders estimate most residents depend on agriculture. Farmers and project managers said the support is meant to address long-running problems such as limited access to quality planting materials, weak agronomic knowledge and constrained access to capital.

Beyond production, the programme is promoting Village Savings and Loan Associations to encourage saving and small-scale investment. According to the report, organisers see the combination of farm inputs, knowledge and financial inclusion as a way to improve resilience, increase marketable surplus and raise household welfare over time.
