What the report says

BBC News reported from live coverage at the Hungaroring that Lewis Hamilton set the pace in second practice for the Hungarian Grand Prix, leading a Ferrari one-two ahead of team-mate Charles Leclerc. Hamilton’s best lap was listed as 1:18.729, with Leclerc 0.148 seconds behind. McLaren’s Lando Norris was third, 0.499 seconds off Hamilton, followed by Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Mercedes driver George Russell.

The session was part of Formula 1’s final race weekend before the summer break. BBC’s live text said Ferrari appeared well suited to the tight, corner-heavy Hungarian circuit, a track where Hamilton has a strong record, including eight pole positions and nine wins. Commentary on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra suggested Ferrari looked like the team to beat, while Mercedes drivers Russell and championship leader Kimi Antonelli had more to find. Antonelli, who BBC said leads the standings by 45 points, sat out first practice and did not complete a clean soft-tyre lap in the second session.

Further down the order, Isack Hadjar was sixth for Red Bull, Liam Lawson seventh for Racing Bulls, Oscar Piastri eighth for McLaren, Nico Hulkenberg ninth for Audi and Arvid Lindblad 10th for Racing Bulls. BBC also noted Alpine had work ahead after Franco Colapinto crashed, while Aston Martin were investigating a problem on Lance Stroll’s upgraded car.

Fernando Alonso finished 19th in a heavily revised Aston Martin. Team principal Adrian Newey described the car’s first outing as promising, according to the BBC, though Alonso was nearly three seconds off the best time and lost a quicker lap for exceeding track limits.
