What the report says

Yahoo Finance carried a Reuters explainer by Amanda Cooper on July 29 examining why credit default swaps tied to major technology companies have drawn investor attention as the artificial intelligence trade comes under pressure. Reuters reported that shares of AI-linked companies have weakened in recent weeks and that stress has spread to parts of the bond market, increasing the price of protection against default on debt issued by firms including Oracle, Nvidia and Apple.

The article explains that a credit default swap, or CDS, is a derivative used to guard against the risk that a company or government fails to meet debt obligations. Buyers pay regular premiums to sellers, often through investment banks or other intermediaries, and payouts can be triggered by events such as bankruptcy or missed bond payments. Wider CDS spreads generally indicate that investors see a higher risk of a credit event.

Reuters reported that technology companies have raised large sums in debt this year to finance AI spending, including Nvidia entering the bond market for the first time. Investor concern centers on whether the heavy spending required to build AI infrastructure will translate into durable returns. According to figures cited from ISDA, BIS and DTCC, single-name CDS total about $9 trillion compared with more than $150 trillion in global debt securities, while technology-linked CDS trading rose sharply in the second quarter.

The report said Oracle’s CDS were trading near 200 basis points, above Nvidia at about 78 basis points and Meta near 93 basis points, compared with roughly 53 basis points for an investment-grade CDS index. Reuters noted that CDS can help bondholders hedge risk, but rising protection costs can also pressure bond prices and borrowing costs, potentially reinforcing worries about credit quality.
