Experts Raise Concern Over Mental Health Burden Among Ugandan Youth

Mental health experts in Uganda are urging stronger family communication, earlier support and more open discussion as they warn of rising psychological distress among young people. The concerns, reported by Nile Post, were linked to family pressure, unemployment, substance abuse, social isolation and tensions between generations.

The issue was discussed at Generation Connect, a youth-focused mental health dialogue organised by Nziza Consults in Kampala. The event brought together young people, parents and mental health professionals to explore ways families and communities can better respond to emotional strain and reduce stigma. Organisers said the aim was to create a safer setting for honest conversations about wellbeing and relationships, especially where communication between parents and children has weakened.

Experts at the dialogue said young people often remain silent because they fear judgment or lack spaces to explain what they are experiencing. Ben Kigozi, a mental health and learning disability specialist and counsellor, said behaviour that looks like defiance or withdrawal can sometimes reflect distress and should be met with listening and support. Dr Kiyingi Frank Pio, a psychologist, psychotherapist and researcher, said mental health responses should focus not only on crises but also on prevention, emotional awareness and supportive relationships.

The report also cited a study involving 569 secondary-school student leaders in Kampala, which found 27% had ever used alcohol or other drugs and 18% were current users. The article noted that this was a specific sample and not a national estimate. The broader message from the dialogue was that both adults and young people need to help close the generational gap and make it easier to seek help early.
