Medical Xpress reported on July 22, 2026, that a new peer-reviewed study challenges the idea that “SuperAgers” — people in their 80s and 90s whose memory remains comparable to, or stronger than, that of adults decades younger — are simply benefiting from unusually low inherited risk for Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers from the University of Chicago’s Healthy Aging & Alzheimer’s Research Care Center and the Translational Genomics Research Institute, part of City of Hope, analyzed 142 SuperAgers and 89 cognitively average older adults recruited across five U.S. and Canadian regional sites. Using blood-derived DNA, they examined APOE, the best-known Alzheimer’s genetic risk factor, and three polygenic risk scores that combine many genetic variants linked to inherited Alzheimer’s risk.

According to Medical Xpress, the study found that SuperAgers could not be separated from cognitively average peers by APOE status or by current Alzheimer’s polygenic risk scoring. The researchers also did not find that rare genetic variants previously associated with Alzheimer’s resilience were more common among SuperAgers. The authors said the findings indicate that exceptional memory late in life is not merely the opposite of common Alzheimer’s genetic risk.

The report matters because SuperAger research is often used to investigate why some people maintain strong cognition despite advanced age. The researchers said future work should look more broadly at protective pathways, including biology, behavior, social and environmental factors, brain imaging, biomarkers, sleep, activity and other whole-person health measures. The findings support the broader message that age-related memory decline is not uniform or inevitable, while leaving open the question of what mechanisms help preserve cognition.
