Ex-Spurs player Vega set to run for Fifa president

What the report says
Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Ramon Vega has said he intends to run in next year’s Fifa presidential election, becoming the first person to publicly declare a challenge to incumbent Gianni Infantino, BBC Sport reports. Vega, 55, also played for Celtic, Watford and Switzerland and has worked in finance since ending his playing career in 2004.
According to BBC Sport, Vega is presenting his candidacy as a call for reform and a bid to restore trust in football’s global governing body. In a statement, he argued that Fifa needs stronger governance, greater stability and a more modern approach, and said the game should serve players, coaches, referees, supporters and communities rather than administrators.
Infantino has faced renewed criticism after abandoning a plan to explore selling World Cup stakes to private investors, a move that prompted backlash across football. BBC Sport notes that Uefa, Concacaf and the Asian Football Confederation have called for him to step aside, although he has said he remains committed to leading Fifa. Vega previously considered running for the post in 2015 and again in 2019, but did not make the ballot the last time because he lacked the required support from five of Fifa’s 211 member federations.
The upcoming election matters because it could shape the direction of Fifa at a time of disputes over governance, credibility and the organization’s relationship with the wider football community.
