Ex-Port Vale & Gillingham captain Loft dies at 39

What the report says
Former Port Vale and Gillingham captain Doug Loft has died at the age of 39, according to BBC Sport, with Gillingham saying he died after a medical emergency at the weekend. Loft’s death has prompted tributes from both clubs and plans for a minute’s silence and black armbands at Port Vale’s match against Chesterfield, subject to EFL permission.
Loft was best known for his five years at Port Vale between 2009 and 2014, where he made 196 appearances, scored 19 goals and was named player of the season before becoming captain. He helped lead the club to promotion from League Two. Port Vale said he would be remembered not only for his on-pitch achievements but also for his commitment and leadership.
He joined Vale from Brighton & Hove Albion, where he had come through after starting in non-League football with Hastings United. He later spent two seasons with Gillingham in League One and also had spells with Colchester United, Shrewsbury Town, Dagenham & Redbridge, Billericay Town and Tonbridge Angels. Gillingham said its thoughts were with his wife Laura, their children Freya and Amelie, and his wider family and friends. Former Port Vale manager Micky Adams also paid tribute, describing Loft as a proud captain.
