Ex-Man Utd assistant Queiroz returns as Ghana boss

Carlos Queiroz has been reappointed as head coach of Ghana’s men’s national team, according to BBC Sport Football. The Ghana Football Association made the decision after internal discussions, roughly two months after Queiroz appeared to signal that he was leaving following Ghana’s exit from the World Cup.

Queiroz, 73, first took over Ghana in April and guided the Black Stars to the round of 32 at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where they lost 1-0 to Colombia. The BBC reports that he briefly seemed to announce his departure on social media after that match, but the GFA has now brought him back for another spell.

The association has not said how long the new agreement will last. In its statement, the GFA said Queiroz’s international background and familiarity with the team make him well placed to lead a new phase for Ghana. His coaching record includes previous roles with Iran, Portugal, Egypt, South Africa, Colombia and Qatar, and he also had two spells as assistant manager at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Queiroz’s next task will be preparing Ghana for 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying, which begins later this month. BBC Sport says the Black Stars have yet to confirm the dates or venues for their opening Group C matches, with Ivory Coast, The Gambia and Somalia also in the group.
