What the report says

Bosnia and Herzegovina captain Edin Dzeko has agreed a one-year contract extension with newly promoted Bundesliga club Schalke, according to BBC Sport Football. The 40-year-old forward joined Schalke on a free transfer from Fiorentina in January 2026 and played a key role in their return to Germany’s top division.

BBC Sport reported that Dzeko scored six goals in 11 Bundesliga 2 matches and wore the captain’s armband for Bosnia and Herzegovina at the 2026 World Cup. The new deal means the former Manchester City and Wolfsburg striker will continue into the 2026-27 season, which will be his 23rd year as a professional footballer.

In comments carried by BBC Sport, Dzeko said promotion to the Bundesliga was one of the highlights of his career and said he still feels motivated to contribute at the highest level. Schalke director of football Youri Mulder also said the club believed Dzeko could help them in the Bundesliga after discussions over recent weeks.

The extension adds another chapter to a long career that has already included Premier League and Serie A spells. For Schalke, keeping an experienced international forward may provide leadership as the club prepares for a demanding first season back in the top flight.
