What the report says

Duane “Keffe D” Davis, a former gang leader, was sentenced in Las Vegas to 40 years to life in prison for his role in the 1996 drive-by shooting that killed rapper Tupac Shakur. According to Sqoop Uganda’s report, the sentence was imposed after Davis was found guilty by a jury in August of first-degree murder, along with a weapons charge, and the judge ordered two consecutive terms of 20 years to life.

The case centers on a long-running mystery in American music history. Shakur was fatally shot while riding in an SUV in Las Vegas after a confrontation tied to a casino brawl involving rival Los Angeles-area street gangs. Prosecutors said Davis helped plan the attack in retaliation for an earlier beating of his nephew, and evidence cited at trial included Davis’s own public comments, memoir, and recorded meetings with investigators.

Sqoop Uganda reported that Davis did not show much reaction in court and said he would appeal. His lawyer also said the conviction would be challenged. The judge told Davis he had taken a man from his family, while Shakur’s sister delivered a victim-impact statement describing her brother as someone raised to be an activist.

The ruling closes one major chapter in a case that has long shaped public memory of 1990s hip-hop violence, though officials have never definitively identified who fired the fatal shots.
