What the report says

MacRumors reports that Apple’s rumored high-end “MacBook Ultra” is expected to deliver the biggest visible redesign to Apple’s professional laptop line since the 2021 MacBook Pro refresh. The outlet says no physical leaks, renders or dimensions have surfaced, but points to reporting from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and display-industry roadmap information from Omdia as the basis for several expected changes.

According to the report, the next model is likely to be thinner and lighter than the current 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro designs, whose thickness has stayed broadly unchanged across recent chip generations. A shift from mini-LED to a hybrid OLED display could reduce the lid’s thickness, while Omdia’s roadmap indicates slightly larger 14.3-inch and 16.3-inch panels from Samsung Display, potentially allowing narrower bezels.

MacRumors also says the familiar display notch is expected to be replaced by a pill-shaped camera cutout that could support a Dynamic Island-style interface. The article notes that Bloomberg has corroborated the hole-punch direction and that Apple’s macOS 27 Spotlight design may be preparing for a similar visual treatment. A reinforced hinge is also reportedly planned to reduce screen movement when the display is touched.

Several current MacBook Pro traits are expected to remain, including the clamshell form factor, 14-inch and 16-inch size classes, keyboard, trackpad and ports such as HDMI, MagSafe and the SD card slot. Gurman’s reported launch window is late 2026 to early 2027, with MacRumors saying early 2027 now appears more likely because of the global memory chip shortage.
