What the report says

Everton’s owners, The Friedkin Group (TFG), have indicated they are looking to sell the Premier League club less than a year after completing a takeover in December 2024. BBC Sport reported that TFG, which also owns AS Roma, issued a brief statement confirming the club is effectively on the market. The move comes as Everton prepare to settle into their new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock and after a period in which the club’s financial position has been stabilised compared with the turmoil under former owner Farhad Moshiri.

The report says the relationship between TFG and supporters deteriorated sharply over the summer. A failed attempt to sell teenager Harrison Armstrong to Nottingham Forest became a flashpoint, followed by outgoing transfers and an unsuccessful move for Monaco forward Folarin Balogun that left manager David Moyes short of options. Moyes said he found out about the potential sale at the same time as the public and revealed he has not spoken to chairman Dan Friedkin since returning to the club in January 2025.

Football finance specialist Kieran Maguire told BBC Sport that TFG may seek a sale price in the region of £750m to £800m, with Everton also carrying debts of around £468m. He suggested the club’s history, fanbase and new stadium could still make it attractive to buyers, particularly from the United States. The Premier League’s owners’ and directors’ test would be part of any future sale process.
