Europe's tallest Virgin Mary statue unveiled in rural Poland

What the report says
A giant statue of the Virgin Mary has been formally unveiled in the rural Polish village of Konotopie, in what BBC World News says is believed to be Europe’s tallest such monument. The concrete figure stands 55.6 metres high and was consecrated by a local bishop during a ceremony on Saturday, timed to coincide with the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The sculpture is set in open fields far from Poland’s main cities, reflecting that it was commissioned by a local millionaire couple. BBC World News reported that its scale exceeds Rio de Janeiro’s Christ the Redeemer, though it is still smaller than a Virgin Mary statue in the Philippines. The unveiling included helicopters dropping rose petals, adding to the symbolic nature of the event.
The ceremony also highlighted the changing place of the Catholic Church in Poland. While the country remains strongly Catholic overall, the report notes that church influence in public life has declined, especially among younger people in urban areas. Bishop Krzysztof Wętkowski said the statue was meant to encourage people to look beyond everyday concerns and toward God and heaven.
Among those attending was Lech Wałęsa, the former trade union leader and Poland’s first democratically elected president, who has long associated himself with Catholic symbolism. The monument’s scale, location and timing made it a notable public display of faith in a country where religion remains influential but is facing gradual social change.
