Europa’s Hidden Ocean May Be Even Harder to Reach Than We Thought - Gizmodo

What the report says
Gizmodo reports that a new Nature Astronomy study raises doubts about a long-running assumption in Europa research: that shallow liquid-water features near the surface of Jupiter’s icy moon may provide a direct link to its buried global ocean. The article, published July 24, 2026, says researchers modeled whether water from deep below could move upward through fractures in Europa’s ice shell before cooling and freezing.
According to Gizmodo, lead author Lujendra Ojha, an Earth scientist at Rutgers University, said the team tested whether rising water could keep enough heat and whether cracks could stay open long enough to carry meaningful amounts of liquid. The study considered factors such as fracture width, water speed, turbulence and supercooling, rather than treating the upward flow as relatively simple.
The reported result is a more difficult picture for future exploration. In the simulations, deep ocean water faced major barriers to reaching the surface. Turbulent flow could lose heat quickly to nearby ice, forming crystals that might block the fracture. The study therefore suggests that observed shallow water reservoirs may be more likely to come from melted parts of Europa’s icy crust than from the deeper ocean.
The finding matters because Europa is a major target in the search for potentially habitable environments beyond Earth. Gizmodo notes that the researchers are not calling for a wholesale change in Europa mission plans, but they caution that spacecraft should not assume shallow water has the same chemistry, physical properties or possible biological relevance as the hidden ocean. Future missions may need to determine not just whether liquid water exists near the surface, but where it came from.
