What the report says

Euro Gold Refinery has opened a new mining site in Yumbe District, in Uganda’s West Nile region, as part of a broader push to expand its gold operations. The project was launched by State Minister for Energy and Mineral Development Phiona Nyamutoro, with local officials, Bank of Uganda representatives and other stakeholders attending, according to The Independent Uganda. The company says the site is its pioneer location in West Nile and could become a base for further expansion.

Euro Gold says the Yumbe operation is expected to generate more than 2,000 jobs as production grows. The company also says it is aiming to produce at least 20 kilogrammes of gold a week and that the mine can crush up to 16,000 tonnes of ore. CEO Benard Feni said the firm spent more than two years on surveys and exploration before securing the ground, and that it holds licences in several mineral-rich districts beyond Yumbe.

The minister used the launch to encourage miners to formalise their activities and follow Uganda’s mining regulations, while also warning against child labour in mining. She said the site appeared to operate without mercury and could help show how mining can support local communities while meeting environmental and safety standards.

Euro Gold says it plans to build a processing plant at the site to improve traceability and keep more value in Uganda. The company has also been building partnerships with artisanal miners in other parts of the country. More broadly, the report reflects Uganda’s efforts to formalise small-scale mining and expand value addition in the sector.
