EU crisis chief urges tougher climate action amid France, Spain wildfires

Al Jazeera, citing Reuters and The Associated Press, reported that EU crisis management commissioner Hadja Lahbib is urging the European Union to move faster and spend more on climate preparedness as France and Spain face severe wildfire conditions during a new heatwave. Lahbib said the bloc’s response needs to keep pace with the risks already being felt, calling for greater investment, public education on fire danger and stronger forest management.

The warning comes as major fires continue in southwestern Europe. According to the report, 330,000 people have been evacuated across France and Spain, including about 220,000 in France and more than 110,000 in Spain. French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez described the French evacuations as likely the country’s largest civilian evacuation outside wartime.

France’s Gironde region, described as the worst-hit area in the country, has seen more than 42,000 hectares burned. Local authorities said fires were held in check overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday, but they were not yet contained. Gironde Prefect Sophie Brocas warned that temperatures could reach 42C and that dry winds could worsen fire behavior. In Spain, some progress against blazes has allowed thousands to return home, though the national weather agency warned of very high or extreme fire risk across much of the country.

The report places the fires in the broader context of Europe’s rapid warming. Al Jazeera noted that Europe is the fastest-warming continent and referenced concerns from the Lancet Countdown that the region is not adequately prepared for the health effects of global heating. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez also criticized climate denialism as countries confront escalating climate-related emergencies.
