What the report says

The European Union and Canada used a summit in Montreal on Friday to launch what they called an Alliance for the Future, signaling a push for closer ties as global trade tensions rise. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney hosted European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and the meeting produced a digital trade deal along with other agreements, according to Al Jazeera.

The two sides said they want to deepen cooperation in areas they see as strategically important, including critical minerals, artificial intelligence safety, energy, vaccines, semiconductors and communications systems. A joint statement said the EU’s European Investment Bank will invest in Canadian critical resources, especially raw minerals, and that both parties will expand work on AI security.

The summit also touched on Ukraine. Carney said Canada will take part in the EU’s 90 billion euro support loan for Kyiv, with an initial contribution of 500 million euros. In addition, both sides said they will begin negotiations to expand Canada’s role in Erasmus+, the EU’s student exchange program.

Al Jazeera reported that the rapprochement comes as U.S. President Donald Trump continues to pressure allies with tariff threats, prompting countries such as Canada and the EU to look for closer partnerships elsewhere. The term “associate member” for Canada has no formal legal basis, but it reflects the political intent to build a tighter relationship.
