Ethiopia: U.S. Lawmakers, Europe Peace Foundation Urge Dialogue As Fighting Escalates in Ethiopia

What the report says
The Europe Peace Foundation and three U.S. lawmakers have separately called for an immediate halt to fighting in Ethiopia, urging a return to talks as clashes intensify in Tigray and nearby Amhara and Afar regions. The appeals, reported by Addis Standard and distributed by AllAfrica, come amid growing international concern over renewed violence and its impact on civilians.
According to the report, the Europe Peace Foundation said it was alarmed by reported explosions in Addis Ababa and renewed conflict in northern Ethiopia. It urged all sides to stop hostilities, protect civilians and rejoin peace negotiations. The foundation also said it remained willing to help facilitate dialogue if the parties agreed.
In a separate statement, Representatives Ilhan Omar, John Garamendi and Jim McGovern voiced concern about the escalation and said violence threatened Ethiopia and the wider Horn of Africa. They referred to a reported strike on an aid convoy in Tigray and called for renewed commitment to the 2022 Pretoria Agreement, including civilian protection, humanitarian access and transitional justice. They also pressed regional actors and the U.S. State Department to support de-escalation and accountability.
The article adds that the warning follows similar appeals from Pope Leo XIV, UN officials and U.S. senators. Together, those statements reflect mounting pressure on the parties to avoid further civilian harm and preserve the existing peace framework.
