What the report says

Ethiopia’s federal government has put in place a six-month caretaker administration for Tigray, according to The Reporter via AllAfrica. The move follows a decision by the House of Federation and was formalized by the Council of Ministers under constitutional and legal provisions cited in the announcement. The interim authority is meant to operate in the regional capital Mekele and across Tigray while the region transitions back toward an elected government.

The new administration has been given a broad but temporary mandate focused on restoring security, rebuilding institutions and damaged infrastructure, restarting public services, and preparing the region for elections. It will also coordinate with federal defense, police and security bodies, along with regional forces, on stability efforts, including disarmament and reintegration of armed groups and the restructuring of the security apparatus. The federal government said the administration will work under its direction and supervision.

The announcement comes against the backdrop of continuing strain in Tigray after the conflict there and the earlier Pretoria peace process. The government said repeated attempts to fully implement that agreement had not succeeded and accused the Tigray People’s Liberation Front of obstructing the process and renewed fighting. In naming the caretaker team, authorities said the aim is to create conditions for peace, reconciliation, public confidence and reconstruction, while keeping the administration limited to routine regional duties and the election pathway.
