What the report says

A drone strike hit the Hayiq Jari 2 Turk internally displaced persons camp in Ethiopia’s Amhara region on 29 October 2026, killing 16 civilians and injuring 22 others, according to camp residents quoted by Addis Standard and distributed by AllAfrica. Witnesses said the attack came around 11:00 a.m. and struck the camp several times while displaced people were inside their shelters. Those among the dead and injured included children, women, elderly people, three pregnant women, an eight-year-old girl and students.

Residents said the wounded were taken first to Hayiq Hospital, with more serious cases referred to Dessie Hospital. One witness said at least 15 of those killed were buried together because the camp lacked space for individual graves. The attack also reportedly caused panic, separated families and set fire to more than 20 household shelters, leaving many people without belongings or housing.

The report said the camp hosts more than 1,800 displaced people and that residents were already facing severe shortages of food, shelter, medicine and medical care. Camp residents said aid organizations had largely stopped assistance and that appeals for help to the regional government had brought little response. As general context, displacement camps in conflict-affected parts of Amhara have faced repeated strain from insecurity and limited humanitarian resources, but the article did not attribute responsibility for the drone strike or provide an official response.
