Ethiopia: AU Urges Restraint As Ethiopia, Eritrea, Egypt Tensions Rise

What the report says
The African Union Commission has called on Ethiopia, Eritrea and Egypt to show maximum restraint as tensions among the three countries rise, according to a report published by Horn Diplomat and distributed by AllAfrica. The commission said it was watching the situation closely and warned that statements or actions by any of the governments could worsen instability in the Horn of Africa.
In a statement issued in Addis Ababa on Oct. 1, the AU urged the three African Union member states to avoid escalation and to keep communication channels open between Addis Ababa, Asmara and Cairo. It said the countries should handle their differences through diplomatic channels and peaceful dialogue, consistent with the AU’s founding principles. The commission also said it remained ready to help support de-escalation and a peaceful resolution if the governments involved requested it.
The report does not specify the immediate trigger for the latest tensions, but it reflects broader concern over relations among three influential regional players. Ethiopia, Eritrea and Egypt have each been linked at different times to disputes and security concerns in the Horn and Northeast Africa. In this context, the AU’s public appeal is meant to discourage further deterioration and encourage negotiated engagement rather than confrontation.
