TODAY reported that emergency physicians in Michigan are seeing a sharp rise in cyclosporiasis, an intestinal infection caused by the Cyclospora parasite and often associated with contaminated food or water. Citing the CDC, the report said more than 11,500 confirmed or probable cases have been reported in 41 states since May 1, with at least 308 hospitalizations. Michigan is a major hotspot, with 7,664 cases and 160 hospitalizations as of July 23, compared with about 50 cases in a typical year, according to the state health department.

Health officials have identified shredded iceberg lettuce imported from Mexico and sold at Taco Bell as a potential source in a multistate outbreak involving Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and West Virginia, though investigations are continuing and experts told NBC News other sources may also be involved. Doctors interviewed by TODAY described the leading symptom as frequent, urgent, watery diarrhea that can last days to weeks and interfere with daily activities. Vomiting and fever appear less common than with some other gastrointestinal illnesses.

The report emphasized that symptoms usually begin two to 14 days after exposure, making the source difficult to identify. Diagnosis requires a stool test specifically ordered for Cyclospora, and results can take several days. Doctors said the infection is not considered contagious person-to-person in ordinary contact. Treatment can include trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, though many otherwise healthy patients recover with hydration and supportive care.
